On 5 July, President Xi Jinping and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo exchanged congratulatory messages on the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Ghana.

President Xi applauded the ever stronger friendship and fruitful cooperation between China and Ghana over the past six decades of diplomatic ties. He noted that in recent years, bilateral cooperation has enjoyed a strong momentum of growth and delivered tangible benefits to the two peoples. In responding to COVID-19, China, Ghana and other African countries have stood together and rendered each other assistance and cooperation, demonstrating once again the time-tested brotherhood between China and Africa. Xi highlighted the great importance he attaches to China-Ghana relations, and expressed readiness to work with President Akufo-Addo in this 60th anniversary year to renew traditional friendship and deepen all-round cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and the FOCAC framework, so as to benefit the two countries and peoples and build an even stronger China-Africa community with a shared future.

President Akufo-Addo noted that it is important to pay tribute to the forebears, President Kwame Nkrumah, Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai who established a firm and lasting foundation for the beneficial relations and cooperation between the two peoples and countries. In taking stock of relations over the last six decades, exchanges between Ghanaian and Chinese leaders have become frequent and fruitful. A great number of successes have been achieved at the bilateral and multilateral levels, and the two countries continue to cooperate to ensure the creation of a peaceful, just and equitable international order.

Akufo-Addo commended Xi for his exemplary leadership in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, and noted that the generosity of the Chinese government and people, as evidenced by offering much needed support to Ghana and other countries, has received international commendation. He assured President Xi of Ghana's solidarity and support in the global fight against the virus, and said that he looked forward to working closely with President Xi to consolidate, strengthen and expand further the traditional friendship, strategic partnership and cooperation between the two countries in the years ahead.
