President Xi Jinping Speaks with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the Phone

President Xi Jinping spoke with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the phone on 14 July.

Xi congratulated Lee and the People's Action Party on its electoral victory. Xi welcomed the positive results from Singapore's COVID-19 response, and expressed confidence that the Singaporeans will defeat the virus at an early date and restore economic and social vibrancy under the leadership of Prime Minister Lee. He pledged China's firm support for Singapore.

Xi outlined what China has done in fighting the pandemic. Guided by the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, China has shared experience with the rest of the world without any reservation, and done its best to provide supplies and technical support to other countries. China would work with Singapore to shore up international solidarity, support a bigger role for WHO and build a global community of health for all.

Xi highlighted the mutual support and assistance between the two governments and societies in fighting COVID-19. He applauded the expeditious launch of a "travel bubble" for essential personnel to move between the two countries and their joint efforts to keep regional supply and industrial chains stable. The close cooperation against COVID-19 is the latest example of the forward-looking, strategic and demonstrative nature of China-Singapore relations, adding an important dimension in their all-round cooperative partnership.

Xi went on to say that in this 30th anniversary year of diplomatic ties, the China-Singapore relationship stands at a new starting point. The two countries are scheduled to hold celebrations in flexible and diverse ways to deepen the friendship between Chinese and Singaporeans.

Xi underscored the importance of stepping up cooperation against COVID-19 to protect the health and safety of each other's nationals. China and Singapore should capitalize on the "travel bubble" to accelerate the resumption of production and boost economic growth in both countries. The two sides may also deepen Belt and Road cooperation through the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and in partnership with third parties. As China continues to deepen reform and opening-up and improve its business environment, it expects a better environment for Chinese investors in Singapore. Xi also called on Singapore to work with China to reject interference and uphold peace and stability in the region.

Prime Minister Lee said that the world has been changed a great deal by COVID-19. He congratulated China on containing COVID-19 successfully and decisively under the strong leadership of President Xi. He applauded the mutual support and assistance between the two countries, which has contributed to Singapore's effective response to the virus. He expressed Singapore's readiness to enhance high-level exchanges with China, as well as all-round cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels. Singapore looks forward to closer bilateral cooperation on the research and development of COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics. Lee also stressed the need for the two countries to make good use of the "travel bubble", advance the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and steadily resume work and production to boost economic recovery. Singapore and China could work together to strengthen free and open trade and the connectivity of regional supply and industrial chains. Lee also welcomed Chinese companies' participation in Singapore's economy.

Lee extended his sympathy over the recent floods along China's Yangtze River, to which Xi expressed appreciation.
