The Chinese Consulate-General in Johannesburg Holds Film Reception of China-South Africa Youth

On December 10th, 2019, the Chinese Consulate-General in Johannesburg co-hosted the Film Reception of China-South Africa Youth together with Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation. The Chinese movie “My People, My Country” and the South African movie “Letters of Hope” were shown at the reception. Consul General Tang Zhongdong, MEC Mbali Hlophe, and youth representatives from Gauteng province and Chinese in Johannesburg totaled around 250 peoples attended the reception. The reception was presided by Deputy Consul General Qu Boxun.

Consul-General Tang Zhongdong and MEC Mbali Hlophe delivered speeches at the reception and received interviews afterwards.

Consul General Tang pointed out that youth are passionate, creative and with confidence like the rising sun at 8 or 9 o’clock in the morning. A nation will prosper only when its young people thrive. China and South Africa are enjoying comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and have made remarkable achievements in collaboration of various fields. This partnership would be promoted to a new high by youth of both countries through contributing their wisdom, creative concepts and energy. Youth plays an important role in improving the partnership between the two countries. The Chinese Consulate-General in Johannesburg will enhance the links and friendship between youth of China and South Africa helping them increase mutual understandings of histories and cherish their current lives.

Consul General Tang also said, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of New South Africa as well as the 70th anniversary of the establishment of New China. Over the past 70 years, China has witnessed profound changes and made amazing achievements in social and economic development. In the meantime, China stays on the path of peaceful development, pursues a mutually beneficial strategy of opening up, and is willing to share development opportunities with the other countries in the world. By 2020, China will succeed in achieving the first of the "Two Centenary Goals", which is building a Moderately Prosperous Society in All Respects and eliminating absolute poverty, which would be a remarkable achievement and is of great historic significance to Chines people.

Consul General Tang said, with the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Chinese people are striving for fulfilling the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation, and as always is supportive by all means to help realize South African Dream of hope and renewal. The Chinese Consulate-General will be committed to promoting cultural exchange with Gauteng province as the bridge between the two countries.

MEC Mbali Hlophe said the movie “My People, My Country” has fully demonstrated the diligence, devotion, patriotism and people-centered principals by the stories of ordinary people during the establishment and development of New China. While the movie “Letters of Hope” tells the efforts and sacrifice made by South African people for liberalism and freedom. China and South African have similar experiences in this regard. The youth from both countries shall have more communications and better mutual understanding so as to push the bilateral relations forward. More cultural exchange activities should be organized in the future.

According to Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, this is the first time for some of the youth audience from Gauteng to watch a movie in a cinema. There were long cheers and applaud after the films ended. The smiles on their faces were an indication that the young audience enjoy the movies.
