2020/02/10

On February 9, Consul General Tang Zhongdong met with Cllr. Geoff Makhubo, the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg.

Consul General Tang congratulated Mr. Makhubo on his election as the Mayor of Johannesburg, and briefed him on the latest development of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) prevention and control. Tang pointed out that the Chinese government has always put peoples’s health and safety as top priority, under the leadership of CPC Central Committee with President Xi Jinping as the core, the Central Leading Group for NCP Control and Prevention was set up and an all-round control system was developed all over China. Meanwhile, Chinese government has released information about the epidemic in a timely, open, transparent and responsible manner, responded to concerns of all sides actively, and enhanced cooperation with the international community, which has been highly praised internationally. Considering Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, the Chinese Consulate General released notice on the website before the Chinese New Year reminding people of taking precaution measures on the epidemic. To prevent the virus spreading to South Africa, the Chinese community with a population of over 200,000 people in Johannesburg voluntarily canceled the previous arrangement of the Chinese New Year Gala at Chinatown, many of them postponed their scheduled returning to South Africa, and stayed at home for 14 days self-isolation after returning from China recently.

Consul General Tang mentioned that we have been grateful for the understanding and support extended the ANC and South African government, for the donations of South African companies, and for the online encouragement of South African people. He said China has the full confidence and capability to win the battle against the NCP with great support from the international community including South Africa. The Chinese Consulate General in Johannesburg will work closely with the Joburg municipality to promote friendly exchange and cooperations between local governments and people of the two countries.

Mayor Makhubo indicated that the ANC, government and people of South Africa have always been the trustworthy friends of the government and people of China. He firmly believed that China will definitely overcome the difficulties and win the fight against NCP eventually.
